The top tens driving tips:

The following is an extract taken from course notes from "The women's course on Self Defence" By Gary Stringer:

1) Ensure your vehicle is roadworthy before going on your journey.

2) Use the P.O.W.E.R. checklist to help remember.

3) Know your estimated time of arrival and let the person know it at your destination also. If delayed update them accordingly.

4) Consider buying or borrowing a Mobile Phone with an in-car charging facility. Give the number to your contact at your destination and leave it with someone at home or the office.

5) Consider joining one of the Motoring Organisations.

6) Know your route – pre-plan and build in delay times. Have an alternative route available. Purchase an up to date street map of the locality you are going to visit. (Consider using a Route Planner when planning your route. There are many different packages available for the PC. and MAC)

7) If threatened, abused or followed by another driver don’t stop. Drive to a busy place such as a main Police Station. Service Station or Hospital. Sound your horn to summon assistance.

8) Never stop to give assistance, instead drive on to a safe location and using your mobile ring the Police.

9) When driving through urban areas consider locking the vehicles doors and don’t place valuables on the passenger seat.

10) Never give lifts to strangers.
