UK SELF DEFENCE is a group of Martial Arts Schools that practice and train for Self Protection. STRINGER RYU JU-KA-DO UK was built on the original concept of Bruce Tegner - an American Martial Arts pioneer who developed a Martial Art / Self Defence System with the intent of demystifying the Martial Arts and in his own words 'to differentiate between those Martial Arts that are practiced for Self Perfection and those that are practiced for Self Protection."
The STRINGER RYU JU-KA-DO UK approach remains true to this original concept and is an evolving integrated martial arts - self defence system. We believe that Martial Arts should primarily teach self-protection, the other aspects of martial arts practice will still develop as the student continues to grow.We believe that self defence should be based on skill and technique and not brute force - this is why we encourage women to train in the system and have a number of female members (and instructors), that can defend themselves against much stronger male attackers. Womens self defence is taught in all sessions and is one of Garys Stringers fortes.
The current JuKaDo UK syllabus draws from many Martial disciplines, including but not limited to Gung Fu, Ju Jitsu, Aiki-Jitsu, Jun Fan, Karate and Bu Jutsu. Taking from these arts the techniques that work best and incorpoarting them into a self defence system. The club operates on a non profit making venture with any remaining monies being ploughed back into equipment and club promotion etc.

We welcome and encourage both students and instructors from other styles to come and train with us in order to supplement their existing systems with a self defence element that is tried and tested. Gary also encourages his students to attend seminars and to look at other systems if they want to broaden their knowledge. The beauty of training in a system like Stringer Ju Ka Do, that is fluid means that should a technique be picked up from another style, system or seminar that is more effective or could be used in conjunction with existing techniques it can be incorporated within the existing syllabus. This benefits the club as a whole.
Our style dosent involve any kata or line work just techniques and pad work. Kata afterall is only really there so that students can train by themselves. Many students spend a lot of time going through kata to get pass a grading - we see the time better spent practicing the actual techniques from different sized attackers from any multitude of angles front side rear etc. This is no discrespect to any other martial art - this is just our way of training.
